Retainer Insurance Program

Retainer Insurance – protect your smile when a retainer goes missing

Your retainers are the most important thing you take home after treatment. They’re also incredibly easy to lose.

They end up wrapped in a napkin and thrown out with the lunch trash. Or the dog gets to them first. Kids lose them, and so do adults, and a replacement set isn’t cheap. That’s exactly why we offer Retainer Insurance.

“Kids and adults lose retainers constantly, or dogs chew them,” says Dr. Chelian. “This provides security for families.”

Why do I need retainers in the first place?

A retainer is a custom-made appliance that holds your teeth in their new positions once your braces or aligners are done. Teeth naturally want to drift over time, and without a retainer, all that careful work can slowly slip. Wearing your retainers as directed matters. So does replacing a lost one quickly.

What is Retainer Insurance?

For every replacement retainer a patient needs, they pay a small deductible rather than paying full price for a new set. It’s a 5-year plan that takes the sting out of replacing retainers. Whether a retainer is lost, broken, cracked, or worn out, you’re covered. And if dental work like implants changes your teeth, updated retainers are covered too. While a standard set of retainers normally costs around $550, the 5-year insurance program costs around $1,000 (and can be financed in monthly payments rather than a lump sum.)

Here’s what it includes:

  • 5 years of coverage
  • Up to 4 individual replacement retainers per year, whether they’re lost, broken, cracked, or worn out
  • Updated retainers when dental work, such as implants, changes your teeth
  • A small deductible (a deductible is the portion you pay yourself before coverage applies)
  • Monthly payments instead of a large upfront sum

How much do replacement retainers cost without it?

Replacement retainers run around $550 a set. That’s a big bill to land on you without warning, especially in a household with more than one patient. With Retainer Insurance, you get up to 4 retainers per year for 5 years and can also spread out the cost of the insurance program monthly and skip the surprise.

Why does Retainer Insurance help kids speak up?

Here’s something parents don’t always see coming. When a retainer costs hundreds of dollars to replace, a lot of kids get scared to say it’s gone. They hide it and hope it turns up. Weeks pass, and meanwhile the teeth start to shift.

With Retainer Insurance, there’s nothing to be afraid of. Your child can tell you the same day, we can start a replacement right away, and the teeth stay where they belong. It’s peace of mind for you, and one less thing for your kid to worry about.

“The parents have that security. The kids have that security too,” says Dr. Chelian. “They don’t worry about it.”

Is Retainer Insurance right for restorative or implant patients?

Often, yes. If you’re planning dental work after orthodontics, like implants or other restorative treatment, the shape of your teeth and your bite can change along the way. Your retainers may need to be updated to keep up, and Retainer Insurance covers those updates.

That’s why Dr. Chelian recommends Retainer Insurance to patients who expect restorative work or implants down the road.

“I absolutely just tell them to go do the retainer program,” says Dr. Chelian. And since we finance it for you, it isn’t one big payment. It’s a good value for the patient.

Retainer Insurance FAQ

What does it cover?

Up to 4 individual replacement retainers each year, for 5 years. That includes retainers that are lost, cracked, broken, or worn out, not just the ones the dog got to. It also covers updated retainers if dental work like implants changes how your teeth fit.

Is there a deductible?

Yes, a small one.

How do I pay?

Monthly, so you’re never handed a large bill all at once.

How is this different from the Smile Guarantee?

The Smile Guarantee covers retreatment if your teeth shift within two years of finishing comprehensive treatment. Retainer Insurance is about the retainers themselves, and it runs longer.

How do I keep my retainers safe?

A few habits go a long way:

  • Always put them in their case when they’re out of your mouth, never in a napkin.
  • Keep them away from heat, like hot water or a car dashboard.
  • Keep pets out of reach. Dogs love them.
  • Clean them gently every day.
