Braces are a type of orthodontic treatment that can help correct several different types of dental issues. They can be used to correct crooked teeth, gaps in teeth, rotated teeth, and crowding. They can also be used to correct bite problems. There are different types of braces available. Your orthodontist will help you decide which braces are right for you. Here is a little info on braces and the types available.
Metal braces are a common type of orthodontic treatment. These are the types of braces that most people think of when they think of braces. They are made out of stainless steel bands connected to brackets and wires. These work together as a system to gently shift your teeth over time. The brackets are bonded or “glued” onto each tooth and a thin archwire is placed over the brackets. Tiny elastic bands are also sometimes used to keep the wires in place.
Ceramic braces are another option. According to a WebMD study, those who had ceramic braces had significantly less long-term plaque accumulation on their teeth and brackets. These braces work similarly to metal ones. The main difference is that the brackets, wires, and ligatures will all be tooth-colored rather than metal. These are used for cosmetic reasons for patients who don’t want their braces to look obvious. Everything will blend into your natural tooth color.
Lightforce braces are just like metal braces but the brackets are 3D-printed and customized to fit your teeth perfectly. This allows for a more discreet, comfortable, and efficient orthodontic treatment.
Another option is clear aligners. These aren’t actually braces at all. Instead, these are clear molds made of your teeth that are designed to be worn for several hours a day. Over time, the aligners will gently shift the teeth into a more desirable location. This is a good option for those who can remember to wear their aligners throughout the day and to take them out when eating (such as adults).
