What to Expect From the Invisalign Process

Posted on February 8, 2024

Invisalign has emerged as one of the most popular choices for orthodontic patients. Invisalign aligners are carefully crafted to help you achieve a straight smile without the need for braces. This article will cover everything you can expect from the process.

Initial Assessment

Your orthodontist will always perform an initial assessment. During the examination, they’ll discuss how Invisalign works and review current dental concerns you may have to determine if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign.

Treatment Plan

Once your orthodontist determines you’re a good candidate for Invisalign aligners, they’ll review a treatment plan with you. The treatment plan explains in depth what it’s like to use your aligners. Your provider will also discuss important things you need to know, such as properly caring for your alignment trays to prevent damage.

Clear Aligners

After you decide this is the best course of treatment, your orthodontist will work with an Invisalign creator to craft alignment trays carefully. They’ll take a mold of your teeth and create a series of trays to help gently guide your teeth into proper alignment. You’ll have to wear each alignment tray for about eight weeks. However, this time varies based on the patient and treatment plan.

Proper Wear

Your orthodontist will take additional time to review everything you need to know about wearing Invisalign trays. You should wear your aligners for up to 22 hours daily. They should not be worn when eating or drinking, especially hot beverages or food. Alignment trays can become disfigured if they are exposed to hot liquids. If this happens, you must have your Invisalign creator make a new pair.

Check-Ups

You’ll need to schedule check-ups with your orthodontist every six to eight weeks, but these appointments don’t take long. According to the American Association of Orthodontics, appointments to pick up your new aligners are short appointments, usually scheduled every six to 10 weeks.

Oral Hygiene

Proper oral care is essential to keep your teeth healthy during your treatment plan. Alignment trays are taken out to eat, which is great because you can enjoy your favorite foods. You won’t have the limitations that people wearing braces do. However, you must brush your teeth before re-inserting them. Bacteria and plaque can build up if you don’t, leading to cavities.

We understand that you’re probably full of questions. The first step in the process of getting Invisalign aligners is to schedule your initial consultation. We’ll happily answer any questions you have. Contact us at Chelian Orthodontics to schedule an appointment today.
