Your smile is the first thing people notice, so it’s natural to want it to be perfect. Once you have achieved straight teeth through orthodontic care, you still have work to do. If you’re not careful, your new smile can shift back. Here are ways to preserve those results.
Your orthodontist will have to continue to check your teeth and gums. These specialists notice the slightest shift and whether you’re wearing your retainer. They can also pick up on other problems like teeth grinding or diet concerns. Don’t get overconfident and start skipping appointments.
You probably missed eating snacks like popcorn and caramel when you had braces. However, be careful when it comes to hard or sticky food, such as super crunchy vegetables, taffy, or anything else that could damage your teeth. Chew slowly and thoughtfully, and try to soften hard foods before eating them. For example, munch on a steamed carrot instead of a raw one.
When your orthodontist removes your braces, they’ll also give you a retainer for daily use. The purpose of the retainer is to hold your aligned teeth in place. You may have to wear it for a few months or up to a year after you end braces treatment. Many patients need to get braces again because they fail to wear their retainers as instructed.
Keep up with your oral hygiene routine. Regular brushing and flossing can reduce the likelihood of decay or gum disease. If gum disease sets in, it could cause your teeth to loosen.
You may need to use a mouthguard when you sleep. Grinding may happen due to anxiety or other nervous issues. According to the Sleep Foundation, adolescents are especially likely to grind their teeth in their sleep, with 15% of them experiencing this issue.
As you can see, the journey to straight teeth doesn’t end when the braces come off. A retainer, a mindful diet, and orthodontic visits are equally important. After all, orthodontic treatment can be time-consuming, and you don’t want to repeat the process if you don’t have to.
